Sissel Bakken

Mezzo-Soprano

 

Sissel Bakken, lyric mezzo-soprano, is a graduate of George Mason University with a Masters in Vocal Performance as well as an Associate's Degree in Applied Arts in Popular Music and Jazz. Born and raised in Norway, Ms. Bakken moved to Virginia in 1998. She runs a well-established voice studio in Del Ray, Alexandria (Virginia), with students performing regularly in D.C., Virginia and Maryland and is herself currently training with Deborah Bimbaum in New York City.

Ms. Bakken has performed the roles of Prince Orlofsky in Strauss's Die Fledermaus, 3rd Lady in Mozart's Die Zauberflöte, Dame Quickly in Verdi's Falstaff, Zita in Puccini's Gianni Schicchi, and The Mistress of the Novices in Suor Angelica. She performs regularly in solo recitals and collaborative concerts in the U.S. and abroad. In 2006, she won first place in the NATS (National Association of Teachers of Singing) competition.

Ms. Bakken is currently the Music Director for the play Mother Courage and Her Children by Brecht at Scena Theatre in Arlington, Virginia. During the summer of 2009, she will be a returning guest artist with Luci Toscane Music and Cultural Arts Festival based in Siena, Italy as well as festival programming in New York, Virginia, Minneapolis and Wisconsin that will additionally take place this season.
